Pack for comfort – how to pack for a long distance coach trip

If you’ll be travelling by coach on a long distance trip, preparing for comfort is important because it will transform your journey from a simple ride to a real treat, and has the added advantage that you will reach your destination feeling refreshed and in good spirits.

If you will be taking a long coach trip for the first time in the coming months, or if you’re considering booking a journey, you may want to find out more about what you can expect when travelling and how you best prepare for it.

Here are some top tips to ensure you’re ready for your coach trip:

1. Packing is half the battle
As with all of our coaches, heavy luggage items are stowed in the luggage carriers underneath the passengers seats, which means you won’t be able to access it while travelling. Be sure to pack your hand luggage wisely. For instance, you might want to have something to eat and drink and have a book or magazine to read. Make sure that these items in your hand luggage are small enough to fit in the overhead on-board storage space.

2. Bring appropriate food and drink
Breaking up your journey by taking snacks with you can be a good way of passing the time. Reward yourself with healthy bites and do not overeat on nuts, crisps and sweets. Some great snack ideas include prepared fruit, simple sandwiches, multi grain biscuits, still water, fruit juices and health bars.

3. Stay hydrated
Even though you might not feel like it, you should try to stay hydrated on a coach journey. Take a bottle of water with you, and be sure to buy a fresh one when you’ve run out. The last thing you want is to arrive feeling dehydrated.

4. Dress comfortably
As the journey you are embarking on will take a good few hours, it is important you wear clothes that are comfortable. Make sure that your trousers are not too tight and that your footwear is appropriate. Layered clothing is advisable, as you can take items of clothing on or off when temperature fluctuations occur. Before you board the bus, stretch your limbs; it really makes a difference.

5. Take personal items
Take your personal life with you when you travel. You could think of toiletries which enable you to freshen up from time to time, which will ensure you look your best when you reach your destination. Depending on the length of your journey, you could include hand sanitiser and dry shampoo in your regular toiletries.

6. Bring a book
Reading a book is a good way to spend time on a long journey. Starting a new novel will make it easy for you to later remember the journey by too! Most e-readers or Kindle devices have batteries which last in some cases up to three weeks, so taking one of those is foolproof. Magazines are also great, especially if you bring your favourites.

7. Listening devices
Listening to music or podcast episodes is also a great way of passing the time. What’s more music tends to relax and uplift you when you are travelling. Most listening devices also allow for downloads of audio books, which might be great to get into a new book.

8. Do some work!
Take your laptop or tablet and log into the internet to keep your boss happy. You will be able to make the most of your journey by tapping away at documents that need finishing, which will free you up after your arrival. Alternatively, you can catch a movie, play games, watch your favourite TV show or browse YouTube videos on your topics of interest. Remember to take some headphones with you.

9. Snooze

If you bring a pillow, some earplugs and/or an eye mask, you will be able to get extra comfortable and arrive feeling revived and energised.
